CURRICULUM
The topics we cover in math are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), developed by the State of Texas. Attached is a pacing plan, which shows an outline of when we cover each of these skills during the year. The document also shows how the skills in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade build upon each other, so you can see where you (or your child) is headed.
FACT AND SKILL PRACTICE
If you are looking for additional math practice at home, you may find some of these math websites useful.
Knowing the multiplication facts (up to 12 x 12) fluently is critical for success in mathematics. This fluency allows time and energy to be devoted to problem solving, rather than figuring out the fact. We spend a few minutes each day on fact fluency in third and fourth grade. Here are a few suggestions for ways to incorporate multiplication fact practice at home, as well as some specific websites with additional suggestions.
With all that focus on multiplication facts, we also want to make sure there is a solid foundation in addition and subtraction facts. Following are links to PowerPoint presentations that display these types of facts, with just a few seconds to respond to each fact. The student should be able to accurately call out the answer, without the use of paper/pencil or fingers!
- Addition Facts 1
- Addition Facts 2
- Compatible Numbers (make a ten)
- Subtraction Facts 1
- Multiplication Facts 1
- Multiplication Facts 2

PROBLEM SOLVING
The main goal of our math instruction (other than enjoying mathematics!) is to develop great problem solving strategies. We highlight one of these strategies a week, as well as incorporating them in our daily class work. Problem solving also includes recognizing key words and developing test taking strategies. This handout provides a brief overview of each of these three areas of our problem solving instruction. Each student should have a copy of this handout in their binder for quick reference when completing homework or classwork.
